That and the scene where Worley confronts him on the ship as he's trying to steal the treasure, and if you thought he was overacting before ... ! OMG, this time he's doing it on purpose (who knew ham came in so many flavors?--and Robert Newton was master of them all!)--making William Bendix's performance seem even more catatonic. But after that, it's all downhill. I hated the ending. (If only they'd have picked one genre instead of trying to make a gritty pirate movie, romance, comedy, and horror movie all rolled into one! It worked in Pirates of the Caribbean--the first movie, that is--but Blackbeard, to me, just seems like an incoherent mess, as if it had three different scriptwriters all working independently ... and no director to pull it together. A more skillful melding of genres, or just plain sticking with one, might have made it easier to find a compatible cast too.) nondisclosed_email@example.com (vampyrate)Mon, 11 Feb 2008 19:04:25 +0000 Re: Blackbeard the Piratehttps://brobertnewton.runboard.com/p386,from=rss#post386https://brobertnewton.runboard.com/p386,from=rss#post386Oh yes, Noll! Thanks for clarifying. That whole lookalike segment was an interesting aspect of the film.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Jenny30)Sun, 10 Feb 2008 06:19:36 +0000 Re: Blackbeard the Piratehttps://brobertnewton.runboard.com/p385,from=rss#post385https://brobertnewton.runboard.com/p385,from=rss#post385quote:Jenny30 wrote: quote:vampyrate wrote: "Poor poodle head"! LOL! You're right - that wig did look like poodle hair! Actually, I was talking about Noll, the look-alike (played by Alan Mowbray). At one point the Dutch guy calls him "that poodle-headed beachbum vot tinks he's you." quote: That was one of the great things about the casting of Treasure Island. Such a great abundance of character actors, all hamming it up at the same time! Ah, togetherness... If only the producers had cared enough to cast Blackbeard the Pirate well - it would have been nice for RN I'm sure to have had more good actors to play off of. So true!nondisclosed_email@example.com (vampyrate)Sat, 09 Feb 2008 17:37:15 +0000 Re: Blackbeard the Piratehttps://brobertnewton.runboard.com/p382,from=rss#post382https://brobertnewton.runboard.com/p382,from=rss#post382quote:vampyrate wrote: (What happened afterwards wasn't so great though. I felt the same way. He did have great comedic timing. His talent is most painfully obvious in his scenes with the totally miscast William Bendix. I enjoyed his scenes with Alvina, as well as with Noll, the beach bum (played by Alan Mowbray). "Gather to me! Gather to me!" (What happened afterwards wasn't so great though. Poor poodle head.) He really needed a more compatible ensemble to make that movie work. (Like the cast of Treasure Island--Ralph Truman was great as George Merry. But, I have to say that the only thing I enjoyed about the film was RN's performance. It was so over the top, but that was what was needed. And in the process, he carried the film. The exaggerated movements, the 'pirate speak' which he invented, combined with the costuming/wig/beard (those little red ribbons! ) proved for a great performance. I loved the scenes between Blackbeard and Mistress Alvina...it really allowed RN to show off that great sense of comic timing that he had!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Jenny30)Thu, 24 Jan 2008 18:51:52 +0000 Blackbeard the Piratehttps://brobertnewton.runboard.com/p16,from=rss#post16https://brobertnewton.runboard.com/p16,from=rss#post16This is a place to discuss Robert Newton's performance as Blackbeard the Pirate (1952) directed by Raoul Walsh, along with other aspects of the film, comparisons to the historical Blackbeard, etc.nondisclosed_email@example.com (vampyrate)Sat, 21 Oct 2006 18:05:37 +0000
