Soldiers Three
This is a place to discuss Robert Newton's performance as Private Bill "Jock" Sykes in 1951's Soldiers Three (loosely based characters from the story by Rudyard Kipling), along with other aspects of the film.

"He must have been fun." --Emlyn Williams (liner notes from "Emlyn Williams as Dylan Thomas in 'A Boy Growing Up'")

Re: Soldiers Three
This is such a great film, one of my favorites. I can watch it over and over. I watched it with one of my guy friends and he wanted to watch it again so we did and after that 2nd time we watched it about 6 times total.
Probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite.

Re: Soldiers Three
This movie was an absolute riot. I love those three guys! I darn near fell off the couch from laughing when RN and friends have their first spot of trouble at the bar. Nice legs!
And how could we forget to mention the river crossing incident and the insanity that follows! Great film!

Re: Soldiers Three
I *adore* this film...
I remember on the old Bobbie's Temple Yahoo! group, Susan asked me if I could possibly translate the song they sung while they were marching... and the best I can do as yet is:
"Life here is somethin' bloomin' awful
Something bloomin' 'orrible, 'orrible an' awful
'Old yer nose and try to think that you was back in London!"
Course I'll keep trying for the first part of it!!! In the meantime, call your mate a dirty twister for making you carry his gun, wear ladies' underwear over your army boots, steal back your guns, save your pal from drowning, loll in the lap o' luxury like blinkin' Maharajahs and remember this film for the important things it gave us.... Stewart Granger, Cyril Cusack and Robert Newton dressed in drag...
Oooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh........... twenty eight days in cell... twenty eight days in cell... twenty eight days, twenty eight days, twenty eight days in cell...............!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, that's about all I get out of it as well. I was just wondering if it was some kind of standard marching song that everybody knew since they only give us a half a verse.

lol ... yes, indeed ...

Re: Soldiers Three
You're not kidding!!
David Niven is brilliant in that film too - he plays such a brilliant straight man, he's absolutely hilarious - specially riding the cow back to the camp in a pair of bloomers and still trying to look dignified.

Re: Soldiers Three
I laugh out loud every time I see David Niven trying to look so dignified in those bloomers walking straight into the side of the tent before finding the flap.

Re: Soldiers Three
hehe, yea, trying to maintian what little bit of manlyness he had left.
Btw, have any of you ever noticed that in the part right after Robert Newton and Cyril Cusack got into that fight, when Robert Newton says "I don't know what came over me" he says it with his normal Brit accent then he picks back up with the pirate accent.
I think I brought this up on the old board, but there are new people here =]
