What other roles should he have played?

What roles do you most wish you could have seen Robert Newton play?

"It's all rather stylish and pretty and rather worrying" --Timothy Spall on his costume in Sweeney Todd

"He must have been fun." --Emlyn Williams (liner notes from "Emlyn Williams as Dylan Thomas in 'A Boy Growing Up'")

I think it would have been cool to see him as Minister Frollo in the Hunchback of Notre Dame

I think he definitely should've done a lot more leading man film noir stuff - if Night Boat To Dublin and Obsession were anything to go by, he could've been remembered for so much more than being The Man Who Put The Arrr In Pirate!! Not that that's a bad thing, obviously, but I'm sure he would rather have received glowing praise for being a chilling would-be murderer than an eyeroll for playing a typecast drunkard and a one-legged chap with a parrot fixation...

But I really think he had the right sort of voice to set the tone for a good mystery/thriller.

And of course I'm in complete agreement with Susan's unposted yet oft-mentioned idea of him being Heathcliffe.

Maybe *even*, after trhinking on it, he might've made a rather smouldering and enigmatic Mr Darcy...!!

Mr. Darcy? From ... ?

I think he definitely could have played more leading men ... if he'd wanted to. But he said himself that he found those kinds of roles too confining and preferred the character parts. (Although the way I imagined Heathcliff when reading Wuthering Heights back in high school, he could be considered a little bit of both!)
