Hatter's Castle

This is a place to discuss Robert Newton's performance as James Brodie in 1941's Hatter's Castle, based on the novel by A. J. Cronin, along with other aspects of the film, comparisons to the book, etc.

Re: Hatter's Castle

I found some clips of this film on YouTube, and absolutely loved it. Seeing RN play such a tyrant was an interesting change. It's hard to believe that he was only 36 when he made this film (the same year that Major Barbara was released. And poor Deborah Kerr - RN has to slap her around in this film, too!) - the makeup and his physicality were very convincing of an older man.
I hope to find a copy of this entire film.

It's in the public domain now, so check ebay for copies.

Cool! How do you find out what's in the public domain and what isn't? (And who is hoarding up all the copies of Temptation Harbour??)

I have seen this version out there but want to know if this 'newly released' dvd has been remastered. The copy that most of us has is very dim and flickers. I think my original copy is from a tv presentation. Does anyone know? Stuart?
Yes, Susan, I wish they would release 'Temptation Harbour' before I pass away!!! emoticon

The DVD on sales through ebay is from a tv source I suspect, so its quality won't be known until someone gets it. I am waiting for my copy to arrive.

No, I'm not planning anything! I was just being my 'humorous' self emoticon Sorry about the emails. I just have not been on my home computer at all for the last few weeks. By the time I get back in the house at night, it's too late. I will try to get on there this weekend.

Re: Hatter's Castle

Have just watched the Hatter's Castle DVD. It must be a copy used for tv as the 'MCA TV distribution' ident comes up before the movie starts. Anyway it's from a very good print and, given the age of the movie, I would give the picture quality a very good rating. Anyone without HC or who has one with a bad picture I would certainly recomment getting this.
