Newton in the media

Was Robert Newton mentioned on a TV show or in an article you read? Did you find a whole article about him? Please share it here!

Susan,
I finally got my edition of Pirates Magazine. Excellent job on the article! I love the pictures. I've been showing it to everyone!
Bravo!

Thanks, Jenny! I'm so glad he's getting the exposure. Hope it's causing people to realize who first came up with that slant on piracy and to want to see more of him. Have you "converted" anyone? I can't take credit for any pictures except that I shared some of them from my collection. (Sue did too--the ones from the Beachcomber and from Androcles and the Lion.) I submitted the copyright information I had for each photo as well, but they didn't use it. However, the three credited to Kim Newton were generously shared by him from his personal collection.

Actually....Yes! I've shown the article to a few of my colleagues, who were captivated. And to my utter delight, some exclaimed, "Oh, I remember him! He was awesome! I loved him when I was a kid!" When I reminded them of Geoffrey Rush's homage to RN in POTC, they said, "Oh yeah...I thought I'd heard that type of voice before."

When they turned to the last page of the article, the text and photo just choked a few of them up. Me too. One of my best friends read the caption by the photo and said, "Arr-men!"

Several people asked how to subscribe to the magazine. They also wanted to know about your website! Hopefully they'll be signin' aboard soon.

That was very gracious of Kim Newton to share those adorable photographs.

It was also neat to see photos from The Beachcomber and Androcles and the Lion. Speaking of which, here's a link to a clip from Androcles:

Arr, me too! (I didn't come up with that last photo and caption--Cliff Long, the then-managing editor--did. He kept it as a kind of surprise. But I thought it was really perfect.)

Arr-some. I'll be looking forward to it. (They can subscribe to the magazine at http://www.piratesmagazine.com)

I agree! They're really great, aren't they? (And finally we see the elusive Kim Newton from the other side of the lens!)

Thanks for the Androcles link. I'll have to check it out next time I get on the *real* computer! (Hmm, I do you think I should make a topic just for YouTube, etc., links?)

Hi Susan!
I'm so glad that my friends' reactions to that article were able make your day, too!

Yes, you definitely need to check out that Androcles clip.

That's a good idea. I was so glad that KittyHawk let you link that arr-some tribute video to your website!

I just heard on TCM that Googie Withers and John Howard Davies passed away this year. Googie in July (she was 94) and JHD in August (he was 72).
There are not many of Robert Newton's co-stars left now, if any.
