Here's a catch-all topic for talking about anything whatever's on your mind with other members of the "Board."

Since I'm now moderating a Tim Spall forum, in addition to this and the Emlyn Williams one, and that one is way more active than this one (over 500 posts in only three weeks since I started it!), and Runboard only lets you have one avatar for your whole account, and it was kind of hard to think of a way too combine all three actors into a 100x100 square (that's not to say I won't!), I've decided to give Tim Spall a turn. (Yes, he once referred to himself as looking like a "swamp creature!) In case you were wondering where Bob and Emlyn had disappeared to. (It's probably only temporary, till I come up with my Next Big Inspiration. In fact, just for fun, we can all change our avatar from time to time ... but not too often since the whole point is ostensibly to make it easier to recognize each other.)

Susan, I love you avatar. I didn't even realize that was Timothy Spall until I saw his name on it, it doesn't look much like him at all.

Thanks! I finally came up with a way to give equal time to all my message board honorees. That picture of Tim is from 1992. Isn't he just devastatingly handsome? With the tuxedo, he could have played James Bond! I think a lot of people first saw him as Peter Pettigrew and can't get that creepy image out of their heads, which is really unfortunate because even now he's a cutey ... but back in the '80s he was a downright hunk.

Hey, if you liked him in Enchanted and Sweeney Todd, come on over to the Tim Spall message board and squee with us. There's a topic for each one of those movies. You already have an account, so you don't have to sign up all over again. (It's too bad we haven't got the new BBC version of Oliver Twist in this country--yet, at least. Tim plays a very different Fagin from Alec Guinness's, and I hear Tom Hardy's take on Sikes is much different as well. At least, the ending is different. I haven't read the book yet, so I'm not sure which one is "accurate." BTW, I'm promoting Bob's version over there! Hard to believe there's anyone who hasn't seen it.)

It's the eyebrows! emoticon

And the talent, of course. All three are extremely charismatic character actors who know how to go just enough over the top to keep you enthralled. To me that seems like a fine line and an impressive skill. And while Emlyn played more than his share of unredeemable villains (and seemed to relish it since he wrote those parts for himself again and again!), they all have the versatility to play any kind of role.

BTW, there's no "i" in the middle of Emlyn's name. (It drove him nuts when people would pronounce his name "Emmaline." As he put it, it's "a perfect rhyme for Kremlin.")

Yes, also, as he's Welsh, having a vowel in his name probably contravenes every Welsh law going!!!! emoticon

I'm sorry I just can't understand the Tim Spallness of it all. Emlyn Williams, I'll grant you, he totally introduced the idea of scruffy=sexy in Jamaica Inn. Robert Newton, goes without saying. Tim Spall... He's just your man out of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! to me!! Incredible actor, I'll grant you... but that's it from me I'm afraid!!

He's obviously just viewed completely differently over here. I suppose in America because they all seem to have such a thing about British accents, he's instantly a trillion times more attractive - but a not particularly good looking albeit brilliant actor from Birmingham - which has totally THE worst, most grating accent in the whole of the UK... nah, just can't see it myself!!!!

Still, at least it saves sharing...!! emoticon
